That was definitely the case when I was growing up. DJs was the prime store, the one my Grandma would meet her friends in the Cafe for High Tea at 11am every 2nd Thursday ;-) Grace Brothers was like a higher end Kmart/Bing Lee by comparison back then.
But... DJs has really let itself down badly over the past 20 years, and really doesn't have the same Kudos that it once had. It now feels pretty outdated and tired as a brand, and a fair bit snooty. I stopped going when they would continually try to sign you up for the DJs Credit Card at the register and you had to politely decline.
Anyone younger than 40 wouldn't really remember Grace Brother well I wouldn't think. Switching from Grace Bros to Myer was a pretty good change, as most people who had visited Melbourne have fond memories of the big Bourke St Myer.
