Just because it hasn't yet happened in the last 5 years - doesn't rule out it never happening.
The majors are cashed up and ready to go - Shell and BP have stated that they are actually reducing their focus on renewables (biofuels the exception) ie solar, wind etc. They see what Exxon have delivered to their shareholders and are looking at upstream profits (THE most profitable area of the business).

Having worked for BP, Shell and Totalfinaelf myself - don't be completely surprised by a complete rethink - it only takes one. Not to mention the fact that BHP Petroleum are right HERE and Caltex are suffering b/c they only run the refinery and downstream side of the business in Australia.
