In the last couple of weeks NAN has (for the first time as far as I'm aware) had the dubious distinction of entering the top 100 of ASX short sold stocks (by aggregate percentage). Currently, NAN is sitting at 85 on that list: https://www.shortman.com.au/stock?q=NAN.
Thus far this year, NAN shorters seem to have largely got it wrong, but it is never a comfortable feeling for a shareholder when the level of shorting activity in a stock is trending upward. Unfortunately, that's what seems to have been happening with NAN in recent months.
While mining stocks which are transitioning from resource exploration to mining development seem to be the favourite target of shorters, it is a regrettable fact that any growth stock whose increased expenditure for long term growth is causing a potential short to medium term drag on earnings can become a target for short sellers.
For the longer term investor who is well set in a stock like NAN, an increase in shorting activity over the short to medium term should be largely irrelevant, but it can be quite difficult to watch the usual associated increase in price volatility.
