States like Hawaii have always had separatists - after all, it was taken by force. Before the takeover, they had their own Gov and diplomatic relations with the US (yes, had a US Ambassador there).

Just that the indigenous people want to have peaceful return of their islands. They still carry protests and court challenges for the US to leave their country.

Btw, Taiwan is NOT seeking independence. Have you seen them change their Constitution?

Their Constitution states they are part of China. Its the US who is trying to change the situation.

On December 29, 1845, Texas became the 28th state in the United States. Formerly part of Mexico, Texas had been an independent country since 1836.

I think California was part of Mexico as well.
