    B17 squadrons would plead the have them escort them.

    I have great admiration of the Tuskegee Airmen, I know their story, but the bomber crews loved them because they stuck close to the bomber stream a la orders. This was because they knew they never had the leeway of the whites to bug off chasing kills, they would have been dressed down in a system that resented them.
