The South Australian Government has approved three new mines in the state's north.

A uranium project at Beverley North and copper-gold mines at Prominent Hill and Kanmantoo are expected to begin production within 18 months.

The Premier, Mike Rann, says the Government has now approved 16 major mines.

"There's about 20 mining prospects now in the pipeline and a number of them, about half a dozen projects, are currently in the very advanced stage of getting approval for go-ahead," he said.

"So we've gone from four mines to 16 in the space of six or seven years and we're expecting a lot more coming."
