Not true. As energy systems shift to renewable this changes rapidly. Direct charging of EVs from solar at home or on the street would be a benefit.

In NZ renewables are 85pc, and I purchase 100pc RE.
therefor my EVs carbon emmissions come entirely from construction.

The lifetime co2 emmissions from my car will be in the order of 25pc of equivalent ICE car. And as manufacturing get greener that will improve.

why are EVs souch cheaper in NZ than Aussie? (nZ don't subsidize yet).
