Many metabolic disease have been cured by scientific advances in understanding them and their treatment, Gauchers disease being just one, many more will become curable through further research.
Cancer is not a metabolic disease, it certainly can't be cured by infecting patients with bacteria. In fact many cancers are triggered by infections (EBV - Lymphoma, craniopharyngioma; HPV - cervical cancer, anal cancer, penile cancer; Hepatitis B or C - Hepatocellular Carcinoma, HIV - Kaposi sarcoma, lymphoma; there are many others) and treating these infections can help or clear cancers.
Criticising the flawed scientific methodology of 100 years or more ago has little relevance to incredibly robust basic and clinical science trials today and in the past fifty years. There is an argument to be had that the pharma industry is set up to target chronic diseases and medications that alleviate them rather than cure them, but government and charity funded research (including some that I do) has no such limitation. There is also an argument to say that the FDA and other regulatory agencies have become too restrictive, demanding "risk free" drugs (aspirin is one such drug that if invented today would likely not be given a licence). This zero tolerance policy occurred in the wake of the thalidomide scandal where human side-effects were not witnessed in pregnant animals, or non pregnant trial subjects and only became apparent once in the market (note that thalidomide is now widely used with good effect to treat cancer of plasma cells - myeloma).
You seriously have to get real when suggesting these treatment have been created from the sphere of alternative medicine and all the pseudoscience and cons that they represent, the very exciting prospect of highly effective targeted anti-cancer drugs, trail blazed by herceptin and taken forward by provenge and hopefully CVAC has occurred BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT STATE OF SCIENTIFIC PROCESS AND RESEARCH AND PHARMA FUNDING SYSTEM not in spite of it, it is not a product of the scandalously misleading "alternative therapies" industry. It is entirely based on incredible and cutting edge scientific research, predominantly the exponential increase in the understanding of the human genome, genes and their products, and those specific to abnormal cells (cancer). We are seeing the dawn of an era of new therapies that potentially herald a cure for many cancers within our lifetimes or at least far longer survival of cancer sufferers.
No doctor seeks to harm patients and chemotherapy is a controversial area, but often the only option available (note testicular cancer and lymphoma are now both curable in the majority because of conventional chemotherapy, and any regime used routinely in any cancer is only done so on the back of robust evidence for effect on survival or increased cure rate).
Sadly our lives have become so easy and so technologically assisted that many people have no idea of how almost everything they do every day has only been made possible by scientific research, often very hard won in the face of irrational opposition and religiosity and how more and more people seek to sell us ineffective nonsense by presenting it in the same manner as science.without anything substantial to back it up.
