National railway network extension plan elaborated 06/12/2010
Cameroon’s national railway network has over the years suffered neglect and dilapidation but today the government wants to revamp this important transport network.
The new plan seeks to extend railway lines to link all regional capitals this in a bid to boost economic growth. A Korean company that had been charged to carry out feasibility studies for the project made public its report.
The findings were presented in Yaounde during a ceremony presided over by the Secretary General in the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Paul Tasong.
The Secretary General indicated that the report is a master plan that has been designed to set standards for the development of railway sector in Cameroon.
He noted that the project shall be jointly carried out by the government and the private sector. He said companies wishing to develop the railway sector shall be expected to respect the guidelines.
The extension of the national railway line shall undoubtedly boost economic development; products of the extractive industry shall be easily transported for exports and heavy duty machinery shall easily move into the country.
With the extension of the railway lines and the current economic trends of 4% growth rate, it can be perceived that Cameroon’s vision of becoming an emerging nation by 2035 is in sight.
