It is a fact that a benevolent dictator will get things done for the good of the population. It would be great if all dictators were "good guys". However, what if a "bad guy" becomes the dictator?
With a democratically elected government, the hope is that there are enough "good guys" to keep the "bad guys" in check. It's the best, one can hope for.
