"What would you do being locked up there with no reasonable prospect of getting out of that situation?"
If they are genuine "refugees", has to be better than living in the country they fled from, with bombed out houses, no food and bullets whistling around their heads.
Seems though that maybe they actually enjoyed that sort of a life, and that is why they continue to fight, argue and destroy the facilities that are provided to them!
"I have serious doubts that the damage is $60mio in a primitive camp for 600 people.
The government spent $100,000/person ??"
I've read it costs over $100,000 PER YEAR, per person, just to keep them. Won't be primitive, by a long shot.
Try building apartment blocks for 600 people, cost would be enormous, then throw in medical centre, kitchen, laundry, gymnasiums etc, plus the cost of items to stock all of them. $60 mill. would be cheap, even by our governments standards.
Does anyone ever watch "Border Security" on TV?
People come to Australia with VALID passports, but because of a minor charge in the past, don't even get to leave the airport, and are put on the next plane back to where they came from.
These "refugees" throw their passports away, we know NOTHING about them, but are still supposed to assimilate them into our community?
DON'T THINK SO!
Just wait until one or more of the people that run/maintain these detention centres is killed, (and eventually it WILL happen), perhaps then AUSSIES might wake up and find that we should have shut the flood gates on day one.
