I’m no fan of the Labour government however I think this expenditure is necessary to bring Australia into the future. The applications for which the NBN will be used for cannot be truly appreciated today as these applications do not yet exist! Think back to the days of dialup, I don’t think any of us envisaged what the internet has become today the impact it has on our lives.
Secondly the current wireless technologies, although they can deliver over 100mbit in theory, in practice due to congestion they will never reach these real world speeds for some time I believe.
The last issue is that after Telstra was privatised it started rolling out PAIR-GAIN and RIM technology into all new estates, if any of you live in an estate which has been built in the last 10-15 years chances are you’re on one of these types of technologies which isn’t able to deliver the ADSL2+ technology most Australians take for granted.
