They must have said the same thing a hundred years ago.
"This copper wiring is a waste of money as we have radio technology getting better all the time, no wires and so portable. Just stick it in the new automobile."

Your right technology is getting better the speed at which they are statrting to send information via fibre optic is incredible and will only get faster.
This will turn out to be the best piece of infrastucture this country has ever had the foresight to build and people in the future will look back and say why did this generation ever consider not building it.
