    "Why do governments have to build all those roads in rural country areas when most of the times they are not travelled on by the majority of Australians who live in the cities ? Why waste all those money? Why should Australians who live in the city be paying for those roads which benefit only a minority of Australians ?"

    I assume that is tongue-in-cheek, but just in case you are serious, I will respond.

    The short answer/reason is that almost all of what city people consume is actually in the country.

    The longer answer is that the inland is a resource, a valuable one. If you disagree with that, then you have not been to America, still the world's biggest economy, where cities the size of Sydney thrive in the inland, think Phoenix, Kansas City, Colombus etc. The reason they thrive is because of America's road and highway system. Without that, they would not exist.

    Australia has vast resources. Are you saying that they should not be developed? If we don't do it, some foreigners will.
