In the first 10 minutes of trade, just under 3,000 lots changed hands, equivalent to $316 million and nearly 10 times the average for the opening 10 minutes over the past two months, according to Reuters calculations.
"Uncertainty has had a tendency to help gold, but that's often just very short-lived. We can expect some higher volatility in the near term," said Dominic Schnider, analyst at UBS Wealth Management in Hong Kong.
