Domestic Malay were truly victimized by their own rare earth / "fertilizer" industry. Many true horror stories are documented, caused by unscrupulous individuals/businesses who spread REE-derived radioactive Thorium on their lands and in their communities. That's in the past, I hope. It was disgusting; I despise those responsible like no others.
I might despise even more the politicians who pretended to know nothing and permitted them to do so (for a fee, no doubt).
Then along comes Stop Lynas like a wrecking ball, raising the specter of that past BUT FOR NO GOOD REASON and even after Lynas was operating safely. Lynas was essentially a backbround radiation event, but pols in power often don't think long term and intelligently like good statesmen but rather they are focused on saving their skins and power. Stop Lynas was nothing more than a political tool of the Chinese REE industry, the Chinese CCP, and the Malaysian national party and politicians beholden to same. There were some good ones in the anti-radiation effort who have learned the hard way that they were mere tools too, little doubt.
The continued ability to import lanthanide concentrate from Mt Weld operations, the operating permit that should have been made permanent on the basis of science and rationality, went a long way toward smoothing the transitions through Lynas 2025 and maintaining a cash pile at the same time. And also easing my mind that they were clear of the political crap as far as they can be.
Nothing has really changed imho: It's still BEVs or Bust. The CCP is NOT going to continue selling magnets at a sustainable price to supply ex-China manufacturers when they can make many times the cash putting those magnets in domestic downstream and industrial tech products to supply the world. Everything a magnet is made of is CCP State Property now and they are going to leverage that to the hilt, and you don't have to guess what they intend to put the sword in.
For the ROW esp G7 economies to keep their position (security, comfort, socioeconomic stability and relative wealth), they must take a meaningful part of the increasingly REE-dependent multi-trillion dollar tech industry group market and to do that they MUST be able to make their own magnets. It is unsustainable and unwise to leave it to the Chinese to monopolize it all, as they fully intend to continue doing. Magnet prices are probably the thing to watch most closely. They will use their REEs and magnet domination like a python whilst their domestic players learn the global game.
Hard to believe some still don't get it; and maybe that's another definition of stupid, as ausheds would say. At which point I would remind him that magnets can't be made without Dysprosium.
