I do not know much about AU tax laws but I assume they are similar to US. The year end in AU is end of June. Putting off sale just 3 months would have moved tax bill out a year.

So you say she needed money. Maybe. What I would do in US is post shares as collateral for a loan. The rates were very aggressive for doing this. They probably are to day, I just have not done it in over 20 years. If she only borrows 60% of securities value then rates are similar to home mortgages and easily covered by gain. At 90%, rates start to look like Credit Card rates. If you believe stock is going up Loans are the way to go and are used often. If you believe they are going down it can be a real bummer. Neither fellow stockholders or Tax man hear about loans based on stock.

Insiders buying or selling stock is always a critical input. To brush it off as 'they needed the money' is a bad idea.
