you raise an important point that has been nagging me for 2 decades.
yes we want to help every person capable of achieving athletic excellence, but surely "elite athletes" are perhaps overly encouraged.
does this elitism truly help the individual? with all the problems of sexual abuse that have been reported its a wonder the whole system hasn't had a thorough review by now. instead they keep throwing more and more money into elite athleticism with too little scrutiny.
this was initially a Howard project, and suitable for the times. imo we do need to assist athletes.
but its about time this expense was in for critical analysis.
