"Under fire" is a bit unnecessary. I thought the inquiry alleviated the concerns.
and "leading people into debt" is also a bit much. It's not revolving credit and bad debts are super low.

I agree with everything your saying, the authors of these articles are pushing the sort of narrative that would only be found on a crime melodrama where After-pay is the predator and the consumer is some defenseless victim.
The question that I would have for those who claim to of been led into debt by after-pay is that at any point did you think to yourself that if you use a service that requires you to make repayments on a purchase, that you would need to eventually make said repayments? To put it simply people need to take responsibility for their own behavior.
