After reading an account of what happened to BP in the US it seems they had a total disregard for the Safety systems which failed Ie BOPs when they new they had problems prior to losing control of the well and they were trying to rig off the well before the cement plugs had set so it will all come down to the people who made the decisions being the problem not so much the concept of drilling wells offshore however in 5000 ft of water things have to be spot on where as off the coast of Australia the water is unlikly to be more than 250 feet deep and drilling here is much more controlled and regulated by NOPSA, so all in all drilling shallow water wells around Australia will continue for ever. hope this helps and yes i heard the bhp exxon well was big big big
