According to Wiki, Daiso has 3670 stores across 25 countries. 2800 in Japan but most of the other countries are just a handful in each. Only 33 stores in Oz and NZ has 1 store. Even the whole United States they only have 77 stores.
So obviously they are a big player in global retailing, but must admit never heard of the name before you raised it. That aside, unless they can triple their store openings across Australia, they are not a competitor. And will take years...if it ever happens.
