Not necessarily true.
All you fundamentally need is a network card in each machine.
If you dont use a hub, and have only two machines .. then a CrossOver cable is all that is needed between the two network cards.
More than two machines, or if U use a hub ... you use normal network cables .. and the Hub does the cross over for U
