For a similar requirement, I use a device which costs about $350.00.
I have seven computers connected - transparently. The modem is connected to the device and the line is dialled out when required by any PC.
The device can take two modems - ie., if more bandwidth is required, it will dial out using the other modem also.
However, as I have only one tel line, I do not use this feature.
