Qantas Jumbo with damaged engine lands safely at Sydney airport
A QANTAS jumbo jet with a badly damaged engine has landed safely at Sydney Airport.
Qantas Flight QF 5 initially declared a mayday when the engine failed shortly after take-off but downgraded it to a pan-pan, where there is an emergency but life is not immediately threatened.
It landed on the remaining three engines after circling Sydney dumping fuel to reduce weight.
The flight was bound for Singapore and Frankfurt with 414 passengers.
A spokeswoman said there was a surge in the No 3 engine and it was shut down by the pilots in accordance with the airline's procedures.
She said the problems was likely - to require an engine change on the aircraft !!!!!!!!!!! and engineers were assessing the extent of the damage.
