Philippines January 2010
ExxonMobil's local unit found hydrocarbons last month on the Dabakan prospect, offshore the south of the country. The company will drill the well to a depth of 5,000 metres, making it the country's deepest. It will also drill a second well nearby.
Mining firm BHP Billiton is to join Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC) to explore for oil in a block offshore Palawan. BHP will hold 75% of the joint venture and pay for the development costs. PNOC-EC says drilling two wells in the SC 59 field will cost $100m. The company has already captured seismic data. The government claims the field could hold up to 0.75bn barrels of oil.
