'Conventional' core is obtained as a continuous cylinder of rock that builds up inside the core barrel/drillpipe as the well is drilled. The alternative is 'sidewall' core, where more localised, cruder, isolated core samples are obtained from the side wall of the well once a section of well has been drilled.
