Graphene battery said in this article is a kind of Lithium ion battery, so their use will not directly diminish importance of lithium ion. In fact, wide adoption of Graphene as anode in lithium ion will accelerate development of EV due to fast charging time.
Graphene is the anode material (conductor that oxidize in the battery refer to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Negative_electrode).
The reason why they are better than "standard" lithium"battery . They have superior surface area due to their lattice structure. Manufacturers roll sheets of graphene into spherical graphene and coat them, process that is widely done in China.
