Here is the point: Where there is a lower baseline risk, like risk of hospitalization or death in patients with covid, the higher sample size you need to have reasonable statistical power. If the baseline risk is higher, as it is with ventilated ARDS patients, you can have that statistical power with a smaller sample size.
