Vocus Communications will open the fourth server room in E3's data centre in Sydney's south on Friday, with one-third of the space already leased under long-term contracts.

The ASX-listed IP transit company entered the data centre market in October by snapping up E3's Sydney and Melbourne facilities for $5.9 million.

The Sydney data centre had three suites operating at the time of acquisition and a fourth - located upstairs - under construction.

Data centre general manager Jon Eaves said that construction of the new 366 square metre upstairs room was finished "in record time" - some 45 days - and would be opened to customers on Friday.

"Everything you see here was concrete blocks and cardboard boxes," he said at a launch event last night.

Vocus had also paid for an access elevator to be installed, Eaves said.

Vocus would be selling total remaining space of 76 racks that were claimed to be able to support rack densities of up to 32 kW.

"Today the data centre is not necessarily about the square metre size but the power you can deliver to it," Vocus chief James Spenceley said.

"This is the second expansion phase of the data centre business in Sydney."

Harbour MSP had also signed a long term agreement to use the new space worth over $2 million, Spenceley said last night.

E3 had been in line to win further business from Harbour MSP in Melbourne; however, Harbour scrapped the deal last month, instead going with rival Next DC reportedly to get to market faster.

Opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull cut the symbolic blue ribbon to open the new data centre floor before switching on one of two Stulz computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units.

"I have great pleasure in turning on the air conditioning knowing it's getting quite hot [in here]," he said.
