BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Merck /quotes/zigman/574389/quotes/nls/mrk MRK +4.13% jumped 4% in early trading Thursday, the day after it said it was ending a key Phase III clinical trial for its osteoporosis drug candidate odanacatib ahead of schedule because the drug had been shown to be highly effective. Merck said it plans to file for U.S., European and Japanese regulatory approval during the first half of 2013. Analysts at Citigroup upped their rating of Merck on Thursday to buy from neutral.
