The price of December gold, the contract with the most open interest, rose $2.50 to $668.70 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Open interest refers to the number of futures contracts that have not expired, been exercised or fulfilled by delivery.
The dollar, which is often treated as a hedge against gold prices, was mixed in afternoon trading.

Barrick Gold Corp. shares added $1.08, or 3.4 percent, to $33.17 and Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. rose $1.56, or 3.9 percent, to $41.72.
Shares of Gold Fields Ltd. picked up 70 cents, or 5 percent, to $14.64 and Newmont Mining Corp. shares climbed 41 cents to $40.75. IAMGold Corp. shares added 32 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $7.35.
Harmony Gold Mining Co. added 15 cents to $8.92 and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. advanced $1.67, or 4.6 percent, to $37.69.
