As usual Thurlough, you see the Islamic problem in a clear and rational way. The strategy you suggest may well be the way to go in the circumstances, or it may fail for any number of reasons, there are too many variables to be certain of the outcome of any strategy.
My belief is that Islam is incompatible with anything else and particularly with western lifestyles. Therefore muslims need to be contained in muslim countries where they can only fight with each other, and not allowed to function in non-muslim countries.
This is not easy to arrange though, but the alternative as you say is either the eventual death of western democracy or we kill them by the million before they destroy us.
Not easy choices and containment is certainly the most humane choice if it can be done.
