Hi, Not sure if you saw the good article in the AFR on Friday about Glencore (in "Chanticleer" page 40). Even if the article focuses on Glencore, it gives a good description of the dynamics for the Australian coal mining industry.
For those who can't see the article, main elements I took from it : - Australian coal miners are not really affected by the ban of Australian coal in China. For example, Russian and Indonesian miners shifted their exports to China (higher coal prices) which opened new markets for Australian coal in South East Asia, - "the surge in LNG prices forced higher use of coal for power generation in Asia", - the production at Glencore's Australian mines is constrained to meet climate change targets.
