Kingy, I built a "Queenslander" in 2000. The stair and veranda balustrades were made of finger jointed pine, assembled without any priming, just a gloss coat. The yellow-tongue floors were not sealed properly and are water effected in the main bathroom.
Obviously it needs a lot of repair.
But I agree with the OP, I couldn't stand living in these new estates. I built in an old suburb on a block that, apparently, had been built on a long time ago. When digging we have found old stuff including a penny and a brylcream bottle. The houses around me are varied in style and age. I like that.
I also agree with Justis when he said big blocks cause urban sprawl. Mine is 1020 sq M but it is rock and stones that even weeds struggle to survive in. Who needs that?
