I know GM well and I also value his views, but in this case, he's mistaken.
These different manufacturing techniques have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Some methods are appropriate for manufacturing experimental quantities, but would be uneconomic for manufacturing commercial quantities. What is happening is that a new method of total synthesis of complex organic chemicals (Fmoc) is being investigated to determine if it offers a more advantageous method of manufacturing commercial quantities of AOD9604. It is not an attempt to develop a more potent form of the chemical.
