"Can the world afford to adopt China's approach to lithium brine processing?

The auto industry needs 20x more lithium production to meet their electrification goals, and a large majority of the world's lithium resources are found in brines. For the energy transition to succeed, these brine resources need to be developed in the right way.

In the last five years, all of the significant new lithium brine projects to come online globally have been in China. However, these projects have greenhouse gas emissions that are roughly 8x higher than South American brine projects (see below) due to the particular lithium extraction technology used in China. This environmental impact is associated with high energy and reagent consumption which also drives similarly higher production costs. This approach is not only bad for the planet, it's neither scalable nor affordable. The world needs new technology for lithium production.
