I was involved in a process in my previous job to review new product development. If you have a good process with financial hurdles and success probabilities, you normally weed out the bad ideas before burning too much cash. From my understanding, the process CSL uses was very similar to ours and is called the gateway process. You cannot progress past a gate until you have approval from the committee and the committee's role is to be blunt and brutal. We stopped many projects. I suspect CSL does the same thing. I am very confident that they manage R & D spend well.
