The former head of the United Nations' oil-for-food program has been accused of receiving bribes of nearly $150,000.

An independent inquiry into the $64 billion oil for food program has found 67-year-old Benon Sevan received kick-backs of more than $147,000 from illegal oil deals.

The head of the inquiry, former US Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker, wants Mr Sevan's diplomatic immunity from criminal prosecution lifted.

Mr Sevan, who resigned from the UN just before the report was released, insists he has done nothing wrong and claims he is being made a scapegoat to protect UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

The oil-for-food program, aimed at getting humanitarian goods into Iraq, ran from 1996 to 2003.
