It is approved as a food additive in Japan, and used in oral care products there (Toothpaste), not sure how much safer you want it.
This paper found an effective dose in-vivo from 0.2 mg / kg. That's 75 times below the 15mg / kg the oral toxicity paper lists as a maximum safe amount.
