It is my personal understanding that Fundamental investing and Technical Trading are fundamentally
different (no pun intended). They certainly do not have to go together and the greatest investors
and traders of all time are testimony to that. If one wants to combine the two I believe that understanding
each one on its own first helps to bring clarity to how they can be combined if one is so inclined, and
make calculated decisions about the sacrifices that must be occasionally made on one of the sides...
In the past, when I have been asked to help some friends who wanted to learn TA but also wanted to
invest, I showed them the following comparison and asked them to think hard about which one they
are more suited to and how they would practically and sensibly plan to combine the two and resolve
the inherent contradictions...
The comparison is a general one and somewhat of an oversimplification that does not take into account
some of the variations of styles of investing and trading but IMHO is a good representation of their most
common forms at the extremes...
It does not take much to see the challenge in combining both. LTR, so far, has been rather unique IMHO
in that, it has been not as difficult to do so... I do not believe that will be the case indefinitely.
