"yet the drudgery of menial tasks is not well rewarded and are under the compulsion to accept their lot of low wages and a harder life"

Life is all about choices Scotty, every kid chooses whether to work hard at school, whether to continue schooling beyond high school, what career path they wish to take etc etc. If someone chooses the "easy" way of not bothering to work at school and just accept a job performing menial tasks then they get paid what they deserve, if someone chooses to be a nurse for the pleasure they get from helping people then that's the choice they made(not that nurses are poorly paid).

Alternatively some people choose to spend a decade of their life post high school studying medicine and then specialising and they finally earn the big bucks they deserve ... and in steps the govt and says "we'll take half of your hard work and give it to that lazy sod down the road who has bludged their way through life". This govt is giving the middle finger to those who have spent their lives working and striving for success, you really couldn't blame anyone on a high income from leaving for a country that appreciates them more
