I don't see this advance dampening lithium demand at all. In fact, quite the opposite. Once we can get about 500km out of a tank... ermm, battery... the writing will be on the wall for fossil fuel technology.
Let's be real. Right now, EV is only practical if you're middle-class-or-better, tech-inclined, or an inner-city commuting type. Nevertheless, the economy of scale of current generation of EV tech is improving every day.
But if you can double EV range without adding to overall cost, it makes it an even more practical and attractive option for the entirety of the global car market... from wealthy rev heads to mums and dads to students to pensioners, from first world customers to third world. The EV market will explode like wildfire.
Without question this advance, if it reaches market, will significantly hasten ICE redundancy. Rather than dampening demand for lithium, it will stoke the fire tenfold. Unquestionably.
Very, very exciting.
