If I'm not mistaken, that just created a bunch of damaged and paranoid survivors who are only sensitive to their own suffering and totally insensitive to others.

Except there were only a few jewish survivors compared to the muslims. Now, imagine 1,000 times the fanatical and obsessive jews, only they are not jews but muslims, all hell bent on revenge.
