I can't imagine ever being vegan myself, and I can't stand militant vegans.
But it's probably a smart move.
The supposed 40% of Courier Mail responders who said they'd boycott vegemite will of course do no such thing. I'm sure they'll have forgotten all about it by tomorrow. But the vegans, on the other hand, are obviously committed to their choice so would be more likely to follow through. So on balance I'd say vegemite would definitely win more customers than they'd lose.
Even if you hate vegans with a passion, who really cares? It's not like they've changed the ingredients of vegemite, they've just added something on the label.
