Thats how democracy works. If the govt does a poor job then the voters
install what they perceive to be the next best option.

Oppositions have no controlling powers for the countries state of affairs,
the govt does.

Sometimes govts perform that badly that colloquially its said even the
drovers dog is a better election prospect.

In terms of the future, once the election is called each Party/Candidates can
put their pitch to the voters who will judge the govt on both its past performance
and its policy platform for the future. The Opposition has an advantage if the voter
perception of the govt is poor as is the case with the current Morrison govt.

The latest brain fart from Morrison putting kids in control of forklifts should equate to more disaster in the polls, especially when following so closely behind the RAT test supply debacle.
He just can't help himself with digging that hole deeper.
He would have to be the most imbecilic PM ever to occupy Kirribilli .
