sandy, everything you say confirms it has become the developers' "ball of slime". Trying to be everything to everyone, it becomes too complex for many to be bothered with.
It IS easy for me to sit in my chair and criticise, because I have worked on several system design and implementations, from a user's and manufacturer's perspective.
