    PNG veteran becomes MIL CEO

    Wednesday, 9 November 2011

MIL Resources has appointed well-known geologist Tony Williamson as its chief executive officer.

    MIL Resources CEO Tony Williamson.

Over his 30 years as a geologist, Williamson spent most of his career in Papua New Guinea and last served as a project development manager of exploration for a subsidiary of London-listed Archipelago Resources.

He played a strong role in implementing new policies for PNG’s mining industry, serving as the director of mining for PNG’s Department of Mining from 1999-2004.

It was generally a tough period until the PNG government overhauled its taxation regime in 2003 to make it more attractive for mining investment.

MIL chairman Doug Halley said Williamson’s experience on the ground in PNG was second to none.

“Having been a part of the country for so long, he understands PNG’s operating conditions, knows the right people and has developed effective working relationships with Papua New Guineans of all levels,” Halley said.

“In fact, Tony is very well known in PNG, with local geologists regularly seeking out the opportunity to work with him.”

Halley said Williamson’s knowledge of mining law in PNG would prove to be invaluable.

“Furthermore, Tony has been noted for his success in structuring joint venture deals in PNG, which will no doubt be an integral asset as the company looks to further advance its portfolio of PNG projects,” he said.

MIL is having ongoing discussions with possible future partners for its Amazon Bay iron sands project in PNG.

It will drill targets at its Poi gold-copper project this month, once drilling is complete at its Golden Peak project, 40km east of Port Moresby
