Yes try a frakking ban in Texas and see if you can walk out alive. I'm no fan of fracking but if you drive a car, eat or just about anything else then you are part of the problem, oil has given us the lifestyle we have for better or worse and is involved in everything we do. At the moment anyway unconventional oil (read fracking it is also used in conventional drilling at times) is keeping us out of a very precarious state with regards to oil supplies.
As for being dangerous well it's a debatable point and fracking has been going on since the 70's but so is drilling offshore as we found with the Macondo disaster in the GOM.
If oil is not coming from your backyard then it will be coming from someone else's .
