Newcastle Knights rugby league player Russell Packer was sentenced to two years in jail on Monday after a Sydney court heard that he stomped on his victim after a fight in Martin Place.
Magistrate Greg Grogan said the 24-year-old's behaviour was cowardly and deplorable.
The sentence came as a surprise to Packer's lawyer, who told Mr Grogan he had "absolutely no idea" he was considering jail time.
