I've visited some of the largest aluminium smelters in Australia and China they are all powered by coal fired power stations. The ones I visited in China had their own power stations on site due to the high demand. Here we power them with coal. RIO plant in Gladstone is powered by Callide power station. Tomago plant is predominantly powered by coal, they need the stability of base load. Just because they hedge their power usage with renewable doesn't mean that's where it actually comes from, it just a box that's ticked to keep shareholders and Greenies happy.
Of the Top 6 producers of Aluminium in the world by volume,5 of them use coal base load for production.
Even to recycle Aluminium power is 40% of the cost.
